High-pressure catalytic reaction in a heated packed-bed reactor

High-pressure catalytic reaction in a heated packed-bed reactor

For the Instituto SENAI de Inovação Biomassa (Brazil), we built a state-of-the-art pilot plant for conducting katalytischer Reaktionen unter Hochdruck- und Hochtemperaturbedingungen gebaut.

At HITEC ZANG, we combine interdisciplinary expertise and handle plant engineering, software development, and hardware development entirely in-house. As a result, we managed this project entirely as a one-stop solution: from the initial concept through development to construction and final commissioning.

Efficient phase separation at high pressure

The system consists of three electrically heated packed-bed reactorsfilled with catalyst through which a gas-liquid mixture flows. The reactors are designed for operating conditions of up to 450 °C and 160 bar. In the downstream section, a coaxial heat exchanger and a separator with an integrated level sensor ensure efficient phase separation.

Typical applications include hydrogenation processes, such as fuel upgrading—for example, the hydrogenation of biogenic components to improve the properties of biodiesel.

The system also meets high standards in the areas of safety and automation::

  • Safety-oriented temperature shutdowns have been implemented in SIL 1 using a PILZ safety PLC
  • Integrated gas detection system
  • Functional safety loops and a rupture disc provide additional protection
  • System automationcontrol, and data acquisition via our LabVision® system in the control cabinet
